The history of Ferrero HCo
Hazelnuts
are at the heart of Ferrero
The history of the Ferrero Group is the story of a tenacious Piedmontese family and of success through three generations. From a small family pastry shop in Alba in Italy, Ferrero has developed into a multinational company that reflects this past, present and future.
Our expertise and tradition with hazelnuts go back to our roots in Alba and the Langhe region in Piedmont - where Ferrero was founded in 1946. The Langhe is known around the world for its high-quality hazelnuts of the Tonda Gentile delle Langhe variety, hence Ferrero’s intuition to use them in its products.
Giandujot
The sweet hazelnut paste that characterised our first recipe was named after a local carnival character (Gianduia).
Cremalba & SuperCrema
The Giandujot hazelnut paste was transformed into a new creamy product that was ideal for spreading on bread. This was Cremalba, which then became SuperCrema. This is the ancestor of Nutella®.
Nutella
The recipe was improved, leading to the creation of the first-ever jar of a new hazelnut and cocoa cream. Nutella® was officially born.
Ferrero Rocher
Ferrero Rocher® is launched in several European countries. A true symbol of Ferrero excellence, thanks to its high-quality ingredients and distinctive golden presentation.
Kinder Bueno
Kinder Bueno® was created in 1990. It is a more refined chocolate snack bar for young adults, with a unique combination of crispy wafer and creamy hazelnut filling in individually wrapped bars.
Ferrero’s first Agrifarm was established in 1991 in Chile. Today we have ten Agrifarms.
In 2012, we acquired the Stelliferi Group in Italy and in 2014 the Oltan Group in Turkey. This brought us new skills and deeper knowledge about the different stages of hazelnut selection and processing.
Ferrero Hazelnut Company (HCo), was created in 2015 as a division of Ferrero Group. HCo brings all of Ferrero’s hazelnut activities together under one structure.
